Hello and welcome to the Peer Academic Mentors page!
Who are we?
We are a group of 14 students (and graduates!) whose aim is to help make vet school a little bit easier. Most people will struggle academically at some point in vet school, so don’t feel you have to suffer in silence and just try to figure it all out yourself. We offer one to one mentoring for any issues you may be having regarding your academic progress, such as time management, motivation, learning style, revision techniques and anything else under the academic umbrella.
We are not here to revise content with you, but to try to help you find better ways to learn yourself. We will not be going over specific topics – that’s what lecturers and discussion boards are for!
You can contact us if you’d like a longer-term mentor who you can meet with on a semi-regular basis, or if you’d just like a one-off chat about your learning. As well as these personal meetings, we also host skills workshops throughout the year, which will focus on different aspects of learning. There will be several of these each year – so keep your eyes peeled on the LUVS Facebook page for more information!
Nine of us are based in Liverpool, and three over in Leahurst, and we are also lucky enough to have two graduates who are our “alumni mentors” supporting students in year 4 and 5. This means we all have a wide range of different experiences, and there will always be a mentor available whatever stage of the course you are in!
How to contact a peer academic mentor?
You can contact any of us to organise a meeting if you’d like to speak to one of us specifically – just find our emails on the poster below! Emily and I (Emma) are the co-leads for PAMs so you can also contact us for more information, or alternatively, contact Alison Reid, and any of us can help you find a mentor who is a good fit for you!
Each year we recruit new PAMs across all year groups, who then undergo a few training sessions to help understand their own learning and how best to help others. Becoming a PAM is a really valuable experience, which will help you understand your own approach to learning and grow your mindset. Not only that, it is an amazing opportunity to give back to the vet school, and really make a difference in someone’s academic life.
Upcoming events
You can contact PAMs at any time by email! We will be hosting several workshops throughout the year, including before Christmas and after formative results, so keep your eyes peeled on the LUVS Facebook page for when these will be! These workshops will help you improve your revision techniques and time management, and help reflect on formative scores, so please come along! We are also liaising with the peer mentors for some of these workshops to offer both wellbeing and academic support.
