International Vet Students
IVSA
The IVSA stands for the International Veterinary Students’ Association. It is, as the name suggests, a place for students from all the international vet schools to collaborate together. The IVSA work towards various aims, with committees of: wellness, education, animal welfare and One health.
Every year IVSA hold a congress in July and a Symposium in the Christmas break, involving vet students from a whole host of different countries.
IVSA also encourages vet schools to organise international exchanges amongst the different Member Organisations of the IVSA. These exchanges offer travel opportunities, a break from our intense course and a chance to witness how other countries approach the course. Liverpool will be having an exchange in 2019, details to follow.
The IVSA can also help you to organise placements abroad and contacts for if you decide to venture out on a term abroad in the later years of the course.

Senior Rep - Keeley Orrin
Hey! I’m Keeley Orrin, your IVSA junior rep. Currently a 4th year student, and carrying on with IVSA from last year when I first became junior rep.
There is so much that IVSA has to offer and I am really excited to be continuing on the work we started last year. I attended the 2018 Animal Welfare Conference in Germany as well as the UK IVSA AGM. I hope that this year I will be able to attend some more IVSA global events. Alongside this, I will be working with senior rep, Alice, to organise another exchange for our students to visit a different vet school and experience different cultures. Aside from travelling, I also enjoy photography and aspire to become a mixed farm and small animal vet after graduation. We cannot wait to give more vet students the chance to travel whilst here at Liverpool, so keep an eye on our facebook page for details of this year’s events! Junior Rep - Calypso Bressan
Hello everyone! My name is Calypso and I am the Junior Rep at IVSA Liverpool. Although I
have only been a part of IVSA Liverpool for a year, I have had an amazing time. The success of our Virtual EMS we organised over summer (a collaboration of IVSA Liverpool x XL Vets) has put IVSA Liverpool into the Veterinary spotlight. This year I am looking forward to working with both Keeley and Charlotte to organise talks and student experiences across the UK including a national exchange (travel restrictions permitted :’)) I love travelling and hold 4 citizenships, hence why IVSA Liverpool appeals so much to me and I am looking forward to educating more students on global issues as well as helping any students with international EMS opportunities. Hi guys, I’m Charlotte and I’m your IVSA Head of Events Committee and AVS Senior rep. Being a part of IVSA since 1st year has been a lot of fun. I have loved every second of it and I can’t wait to organise more events for everyone to enjoy. So far, our IVSA events have included talks and most recently the IVSA x XLVets Virtual Clinical EMS. This was a huge success and we are so happy we could provide for the students in tough times. Let’s see how future events unfold! I decided to participate in IVSA because of my European background. I went to a European School in North Holland, The Netherlands and grew up there for 17 years. My parents now live in Spain and this has sparked my interest to do EMS abroad in Spain and abroad! Favourite pub in Liverpool: Pogues in town-love the live music & board game Favourite hobbies: working out, dancing, horse riding and volunteering at shelters.

XL Vets helps bring vet student’s EMS idea to life - Summer 2020
This Summer, IVSA Liverpool collaborated with XL Vets, a community of independent, progressive veterinary practices, to produce 3 weeks of virtual EMS for all UK and Ireland veterinary students. IVSA Liverpool (Keeley, Calypso and Charlotte) worked closely with Andrew Curwen (CEO of XL Vets) and his team to connect with vets internationally, so we could provide interactive and relevant clinical cases to replace cancelled EMS. IVSA Liverpool- Austria Exchange 2017
Liverpool 1st-5th February
This year, IVSA Liverpool partnered with IVSA Austria for an unforgettable exchange. The first part of the exchange happened in February when 12 students from the School of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna headed over to Liverpool for 5 exciting days of activities alongside their Liverpool partners.
The exchange started on Wednesday 1st February, with a trip to a local pub and hotspot for Liverpool students, the Brookehouse, for a pint and a run through of the next 4 days of activities.
The next morning, we headed out to our Leahurst campus for tours of all of our hospitals as well as the university dairy farm. Back in Liverpool, a quick tour was conducted round some of the most interesting areas surrounding the university campus, including the metropolitan cathedral and one of the oldest pubs in Liverpool, before attending a talk from BVA-AWF rep, Chris Laurence, discussing dangerous dog laws in the UK. Our Austrian students also had the opportunity to talk about how these laws differed in their country, which was extremely interesting for all of the Liverpool students in attendance.
Friday consisted of a city tour, which took our visitors to all the best parts of Liverpool. We went up the tower in the stunning Anglican cathedral to take in the breath-taking views over the city and beyond, headed to the docks and the Austrian students also had the opportunity to sample some Scouse, a traditional dish from Liverpool. Later on in the afternoon, we conducted a tour of our Liverpool campus and then headed to our clinical skills lab. We were aided by a first-year group who helped our visitors out with several skills, including suturing, assisted parturition and dental examinations. Everyone then went home to glam up for an evening out on the town! There’s nothing British students love more than a night out so we showed the Austrians some of the local haunts and were even treated to some Austrian karaoke!
To help the hangovers on Saturday morning, everyone went for the breakfast at the Tavern, which has been voted the best breakfast in the UK. This was followed by a sunny walk round one of our most beautiful parks, Sefton park. Later on, we headed to Spring city, a trampoline park which was followed by fish and chips and visiting the famous music venue, the Cavern Club for some live music.
Sadly, our Austrian visitors had to leave on Sunday but this wasn’t before we had visited the local beach at Crosby and had a traditional roast dinner.
Vienna 4th-8th June
Once our exams had finished, our 12 Liverpool students hopped on the plane and headed to Vienna. We were greeted at the university with pizza and beer before running through the week’s schedule and heading back to our host’s homes.
On Monday morning, we began with a tour of the city, visiting all the highlights followed by a lunch of Kasekrainer, the cheese-filled sausage which is a favourite with the locals. Later on, we visited the Natural History museum before heading to Prater, a theme park in the middle of Vienna! We also went for drinks at a beach bar on the banks of the River Danube.
Once our exams had finished, our 12 Liverpool students hopped on the plane and headed to Vienna. We were greeted at the university with pizza and beer before running through the week’s schedule and heading back to our host’s homes.

After, we caught a bus up the Kahlsberg, a large hill overlooking the city – the view was incredible. We then visited Schonnbrun, a huge palace in the middle of Vienna that once housed the aristocracy of Austria. That evening, we all gathered at the house of the IVSA Austria Exchange officer for a BBQ and some drinks.
Wednesday began with a pathology workshop at the university before a tour of the university where we also had the opportunity to watch the covering of a stallion. After lunch in the uni canteen, we had a free afternoon to do what we wanted. Some of us visited Nachtmarkt, a huge market, and went to a coffee house for Sachertorte, an Austrian delicacy.
