FAVS focuses on all things farm and is the first stop for students who wish to pursue a career as a farm/mixed veterinary practitioner. Regardless of farming background or experience we aim to support and encourage you into a future career supporting both the British food supply and farm animal welfare.
We aim to provide opportunities to consolidate and expand on lecture material, applying it to real life scenarios. Similarly, there is simply not time to cover all aspects of farm production and practice within the curriculum and we aim to fill those knowledge gaps. As a society we achieve this through talks, practical sessions and visits to a range of farms and facilities - many of which are presented by individuals and organisations at the top of their field of expertise.
Whilst a part of the Liverpool University Veterinary Society, FAVS is a standalone society supported by our national body (appropriately named National FAVS). As well as events specific to Liverpool there is also a national congress held annually which is not to be missed! We work very closely with other organisations within the profession; the British Cattle Veterinary Association (BCVA) and National Sheep Association (NSA) to name just a few.
If the idea of working with production animals in the future grabs you, or you just have an interest in farm animals, this is the society for you! Our membership fee for new members is £15 and this will cover you for your entire duration at Liverpool. As a member all Liverpool FAVS events and talks are free - which is incredible value for money. This fee helps us to run talks & events but also covers your membership to the National FAVS society. We would love you to join us and you can do so by either emailing the address below or contacting a committee member.
To see more information about our society you can like our public Facebook page below - once membership has been confirmed we will add you to the private Facebook group containing details on how to attend our events and additional benefits ( great EMS placements advertised along with congress info etc.)
Hi! I’m Lillian, I am currently a 4th year from Co. Antrim, Northern Ireland. I am so excited and grateful to be voted your LFAVS President this year! I am from a breeding suckler farm back home and am very passionate about beef cattle and beef industry representation at the vet school! We keep mainly breed Charolais x Limousin calves in the stunning Glens of Antrim (which should be on every traveller’s bucket list!). We have also been known to keep pedigree Dexter cows in the past.
In the coming year, I am really looking forward to welcoming all our members back to interesting in-person talks, as well as getting our species days up and running again post-COVID. We will also be hosting some virtual talks throughout the year to make our content as accessible to our members as we possibly can, and allow a wider variety of speckers to come, that otherwise would not have been able to talk to us in person. I also aim to organise farm walks or visits where I can, in order to give our members an immersive experience that they wouldn’t normally get. I highly recommend you consider joining our society, as we have a delightful community of people who love farming, as well as being an open and accepting place for people who may not have a farming background! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! Also keep an eye on our social media pages for events, talks and some nice revision quizzes. 😊

Olivia Stockdale – Vice president
Hello I’m Olivia. I’m a fifth year (don’t know where the time has gone!!) student from North Yorkshire. I am very grateful to say that I am from a dairy farm. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my farming background and my current plan is to be able to work part time at home alongside vetting. I was also fortunate to have a job during COVID in my 3rd year milking goats- quite different to cows and I always look forward to going back during holidays!! I am so glad to be on the FAVS committee for the 2nd year. I enjoyed organising species day last year and am excited to continue the hard work of FAVS this year. FAVS has been a huge part of my university experience and I hope this is the case for many students this next year.
Elsie Pemble - Treasurer
Hi, I’m Elsie – your LFAVS Treasurer this year. I’m so excited to be involved in LFAVS, having been an active member since my first year.
I have grown up around my small family herd of pedigree dairy goats, giving me an interest in goat medicine, as well as pedigree breeding, high herd health status and the nutrition of dairy animals. I’ve been falling more and more in love with all things farm animal ever since I did my first ever lambing work experience, and now I feel most at home wearing waterproofs!
I am really looking forward to planning some exciting things for you all this year, and meeting lots of you at LFAVS events!
Mairi MacPherson - Species day coordinator
I’m Mairi, a 2nd year from a small town in southwest Scotland. Im one of this years species day coordinators. I’ve a keen interest in sheep and cattle, particularly dairy. After finishing university in Glasgow, I spent my time working as a calf rearer on a large spring calving block farm for almost two years (the cute calves soon lose their novelty when 800 are screaming at you at 5am) I then went onto train as an artificial insemination technician for Genus ABS, before starting at Liverpool. With over a decade of sheep experience it’s no real surprise that I am perusing a career as a large animal vet.I’m particularly interested in reproduction and genetics, both in cattle and sheep. I enjoy swimming, plying squash and when I’m not surrounded by cows, I spend most of my time at home with my 4 year old cocker spaniel Sam. I’m really looking forward to seeing what the committee can bring together this year and getting to know more like-minded people.
Heidi Wilson - Species day coordinator
I’m Heidi, a second-year student, and my role is species day co-ordinator.
3 years ago, I was given the best opportunity – full-time employment on a dairy farm. I know how life changing stepping on a farm can be. So, this year I will work hard to open the door to farm life.
I’m small but mighty, breaking down barriers. I was a finalist in Britain’s Fittest Farmer, so when I am not in the milking parlour or spending time with my pet goats I am at CrossFit
Sean Forshaw - Species day coordinator
I’m Sean, currently in my second year and one (of many) species day coordinators on this year’s committee. While I’m not from a livestock farming background since undertaking my farming placements I have developed a big interest in all things farm, with the hope of one day starting out my career in mixed practice. I’ve loved getting involved with lambing, milking and even pig farming, although my boots still have the faint smell of pig on them.
I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the committee to put on species days for everyone to get involved in and grow your interest in farm, just like I have.
Ria Xenophontos – Species Day Coordinator
Hi I’m Ria, I’m in 4th year and I’m super excited to be a species day coordinator this year! I’m not at all from a farming background but have thoroughly enjoyed all my placements up until now so it’s time to get a bit more involved and prove that anyone can get into farming.
Anna James – Species Day Coordinator
Hi I'm Anna a fourth year and one of the species day coordinators this year. I'm originally from Cardiff so definitely not from a farming background but I've absolutely loved all of my farm placements. I'm so excited to be part of the team organising the beef and sheep and dairy days to boost everyone's confidence in farm practice and farm animal handling. Hopefully we'll get as many of you as possible involved in developing your practical skills ready for EMS and rotations!
Christina MacKenzie – Species Day Coordinator
Hi I am Christina, a current third year student and I am delighted to be one of the species day co-ordinators on the LFAVS committee this year! My love of all things farm started young, growing up on a beef and sheep farm on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. I’ve always considered myself more a cow person, but I recently started my own herd of pedigree Suffolks and I may be starting to sway a little!! While I have loved the large animal focused teaching on the course so far, developing a keen interest in parasitology and bovine reproduction especially, I hope that I can help to organise talks and practicals that explore the areas (and species!) maybe not so well covered - to ensure we’re all ready to get out on farm!
FAVs allows me to have a little bit more farm away from home, and I am looking forward to getting stuck in and hopefully helping to organise lots of great events this year!
